Two Pi pushes the envelope in Wind Noise Cancellation

Vienna, April 8th 2010 WIND NOISE CANCELLATION - WNX, the latest outcome of Two Piís comprehensive scientific program, perfectly rounds out the premium algorithm portfolio for manufacturers in the hearing healthcare, ear protection and professional communications industries.

Designed as a dual microphone system, WNX addresses the problem of annoying wind noise with innovative acoustical signal restoration. This advanced method fully outperforms common approaches that narrow the processing bandwidth at low frequencies to reduce the wind disturbance - thus negatively affecting the entire acoustical content.

Acoustical signal restoration utilizes a source separation concept to effectively recover the desired signal that is hidden in the contaminated mixture. WNX delivers an improvement of the signal-to-noise-ratio of up to 15 dB while preserving the spectral character of the desired signal.

In addition to signal restoration, WNX delivers a robust wind noise indicator to be used for optimization of the overall acoustical sound quality. Other active algorithms working in concert such as Dynamic Range Compression (DRC), Noise Cancellation (NC) and (Acoustic Comfort Optimization (ACO) are automatically adjusted based upon the acoustical environment, resulting in increased user comfort.

WNX is available as plug-in DSP library: this time-domain pre-processing block can easily be added as a front end to any software project. The additional time delay is less than 0.5 ms, and the extra processing incurred amounts to 1.1 MIPS for a sampling frequency of 16 kHz.

Two Pi launches QUADRATE - integrated hearing-aid algorithm suite

Incorporating the Q_Fit fitting software, QUADRATE delivers a complete software solution for any hearing aid brand and guarantees rapid product launch.

Q_Fit’s intuitive approach benefits both audiologists and their customers by reducing appointment time and ensuring full satisfaction for hearing impaired customers. Based on .NET technology, the package fully supports all SQL-databases and provides fine-tuning tools for in-situ verification.
Q_Fit is optionally equipped with the proven NAL-NL1 fitting rule and can be easily customized by automatically introducing corporate identity attributes such as logos, colours and pictures.

QUADRATE embraces Two Pi’s carefully crafted audio processing algorithms, and expands them further to provide the highest signal processing performance as offered by the leading hearing-aid brands.

The novel audio processing algorithm, Acoustic Comfort Optimization (ACO), utilizes generalized signal statistic to relieve transient impulsive noise disturbances. While common noise reduction algorithms do not protect from transient noises like that of clanging dishes, ACO provides exceptional listening comfort without negatively influencing speech intelligibility.

ADAPTIVE FEEDBACK CANCELLATION utilizes the new feedback control technology that is based on supervised cancellation by predicting deviations in feedback path estimation.

Acoustic Comfort Optimization (ACO) releaves transient impulsive noise disturbances highly effectively without negatively influencing speech intelligibility. Thus the algorithm is delivering optimal comfort for a variety of commonplace listening situations.

Performing continuous analysis of signal behavior, ACO is capable of accurately identifying annoying transient noises and separating them from transients in speech. High resolution in time and frequency are the fundaments for its exceptional performance.

While common noise reduction algorithms do not protect from transient noises like that of clanging dishes in restaurants (they are too short in duration to be detected by conventional noise estimation), ACO successfully overcomes this fact by utilizing generalized signal statistics.

AMI Semiconductor's Ezairo DSP platform selected by Two Pi for its next generation of sound processing algorithms

Vienna October 17th,  2007 - AMI Semiconductor (NASDAQ:AMIS), a designer and manufacturer of state-of-the-art mixed-signal and digital products for the automotive, medical, industrial, and military/aerospace sectors, announced that Two Pi Signal Processing Applications GmbH (Two Pi), a specialized provider of advanced software solutions addressing hearing loss and communications in noisy environments, has selected the Ezairo 5900 series of integrated circuits and packaged hybrids to further develop its suite of sound processing algorithms for hearing aid devices.

Two Pi's Direct Hearing software platform is comprised of configurable sound processing algorithm blocks that are selectively assembled to form a customized software suite for sophisticated hearing aids. Already successfully established for AMI Semiconductor's Orela 4500 series, Direct Hearing has been further enhanced and optimized for the Ezairo 5900 series. Initial benchmarks have clearly demonstrated the superior performance of Ezairo; the suite's adaptive feedback canceller delivers up to 19dB of additional stable gain and the Formant Booster speech intelligibility enhancer yields significantly better results.

The Ezairo 5900 series features a 24-bit precision open programmable DSP core combined with a highly reconfigurable HEAR(TM) accelerator engine. This unique dual-core architecture allows the Direct Hearing suite to run with an optimal balance between performance and power consumption. Ezairo 5900 includes all necessary on-chip peripheral blocks to directly interface with transducers, a battery and controls. These blocks have been crafted for high-precision sound throughout the system, offering an exceptional input dynamic range of up to 110dB as well as an audio bandwidth extendable to 16kHz.
